Unchained was one of the few books written by Jen that I hadn’t read. To be honest, I had no idea what I was waiting for!Unchained tells the story of Lily, a Nephilim, who lives by the code of killing the Fallen—those who fell from grace, deadheads, minions, and whatever else may rear their ugly head. Being part of the Sanctuary provides all Nephilims with the proper training and lodging needed in order to protect themselves from the Fallen.Let’s first start off with new favorite book boyfriend: Julian. Julian is a Fallen—and most of the time they fell because they had no no fun time with humans. But from the beginning there is something different about Julian and Lily—she is supposed to kill him, but he reels her in with every word and touch. He’s like drinking your favorite coffee on a Spring morning. Protective. Possessive. Kind. Warm. Compassionate. Sexy. Loving. He is the kind of man that pushes you to be the best you.But then Lily runs into a cop named Michael—a Nephilim that doesn’t know he is—as she is hunting a dead head. To add onto Lily’s mounting tasks, she now has to train Michael so that he can fend for himself in the big bad world that has permanently changed.Nathaniel, the head of the Sanctuary is also dealing with a level 10 issue: someone is giving the whereabouts of baby Nephilims to a Fallen. And when eyes are on Lily because of her not relationship-relationship with Lily, it’s now her task to prove her innocence....while training Michael, and hunting, and dealing with Julian.Unchained was definitely different then all of Jen’s other books. It took me awhile to get into it, but once I was into it I devoured the book. What I loved the most is that Lily is extremely relatable—and how the name of the book tied into the book itself? Probably my favorite part. I think we can all see a little bit of ourselves in Lily.4/5 stars, definitely a re-read! The story of Unchained follows Lily, a badass Nephilim who takes down Fallen angels, minions (Nephilim turned bad) and deadheads(humans possessed by other souls) in order to save humanity. Lily acts under contractual obligation with The Sanctuary to do so, but since she has grown up in the Sanctuary she knows no other way of life. Michael, the other character POV of the story is an average Joe who happens upon a deadhead the first night on the job as a cop. Michael and Lily meet up when she saves his ass and virtually knocks him out before realizing that Michael is also a Nephilim. Julian is a Fallen who has been following Lily for the past 8 years. He is kind of a mystery. Since meeting her he hasn't hurt Nephilim and he's saved Lily's life twice. Forbidden romance blossoms between Lily and Julian despite all of the warnings given to her and when it's found that there is a traitor among the Nephilim at the Sanctuary things only become more complicated.This story was very spicy ♡ The mystery was really good and I didn't expect the betrayal to come from the source it did. I loveeeddd Julian and Lily, their chemistry was explosive. The world building is phenomenal and believable. Jen also did an amazing job crafting each character as their own solid person. 1 off characters even have a sense of purpose, some I actually felt pity for. As usual in Jennifer's work, the conflict felt realistic despite the fantastic nature of the beast. As a reader I was easily able to connect with her characters and universe. This book was such a gem — a must read for Jennifer L. Armentrout fans.
